Hi:

Thanks to everyone who responded to my query whether
publicly or privately.

The best place I found was a public site sponsored by ZOOM:

  http://www.modems.com/general/mcglossary.html

which has plain text on various pages so you can cut and paste
the text into a document. Info pages runs from basic to advanced.

CONTENTS include:
----------
How Does a Modem Work?
    Modem Overview
    Analog vs. Digital
    Data Compression
    Error Correction
    Flow Control
    UARTs and Data Buffering
Standards and Protocols
    Bell/CCITT/ITU-T Standards
    Data Transfer Protocols
    Fax Standards and Protocols
    Modulation Protocols
    TCP/IP, SLIP, and PPP
Communications and Software issues
    AT Command Sets
    COM Port Settings
    Data Communications Application Software
    IRQ Settings
    S Registers
    Synchronous vs. Asynchronous Data Transfer
Hardware Platforms
----------

Also, to share a resource pointed out by Curt Davis (in a
private email), the USR modem manuals are on the USR
site in Word format:

   http://www.usr.com/home/online/manuals.htm

Curt also recommends:

   http://www.teleport.com/~curt/modems.html
   http://www.modemhelp.com/

Finally, Nospin has a page up on modems at:

   http://nospin.com/pc/modem.html

Thanks again.

Regards,

John Chin
