Larry, did you enter the string according to your
modem manual?  I start mine with AT&F (restore
factory defaults) and end it with the command to
write and save (for my modem that's &w).   If you
don't have a manual there are tons of good references
for the Hayes Command Set, which most modems
adhere to for setup and control.
