I installed an additional 16 Megs of Ram in a friend's computer today. On
bootup, the machine went through the memory check two or three times, then
booted normally.
In the subsequent boot, the HD spun briefly, then stopped. I checked for
loose connections, then booted the computer (Tower) which was lying on its
side. Normal boot.
Various experiments have demonstrated that it will now boot only while lying
on its side, with one instance of booting while properly oriented.
What in the world have I done?
