Thanks so much for your reply. It always helps just to know someone else is
going through the same thing. And I had never heard of Mylacon before; I'll
have to see if I can get that here, though, now that we've basically
eliminated dairy, I don't know if she needs it anymore.
I used to allow Eleanor to have pizza with the cheese scraped off and other
"minor" things like eating out mistakes (french fries that have absorbed
milk proteins from who-knows-where, traces of butter on veggies, etc.) and
dairy in baked goods and lots of hidden dairy from food additives, but her
rash was triggered so frequently and the cramps/diarrhea would seem to flare
up out of nowhere (buildup of too many "minor" things?) that we stopped
every single, little bit of dairy in her diet. Now that the rash and
intestinal problems are totally cleared up, however, I _do_ again allow an
occasional "slip-up" like eating out unknowns (the french fry oil, etc.)
Right now her reaction to those occasional hidden dairy products is just a
rash, but I worry about development of further allergic reactions. Your
decision to allow those things into Katelyn's diet seems logical since there
is no family history of allergy and you have the same milk sensitivity.
However, for Eleanor, she's got allergies on both sides of the family so I'm
terrified that she'll develop my asthma or worse.
I want to be able to allow her to have that fruit popsicle that another
child offers to her even though I don't know the ingredients, but I don't
want to trigger something worse than a rash. I'm torn. I don't know where
to draw the line.
Does anybody else out there have experience with this sort of allergic
reaction? Extremely sensitive to even mild traces of dairy, but no severe
symptoms?
