Briefly, the symbols are not on many foods, but a growing number. You can
typically find the symbol on the front, lower left of the packages of
breads, cookies, and rolls, etc. But the symbols can appear anywhere, and
they're often quite small. With practice, you'll know where to look on each
kind of product.
Kosher pareve means totally milk-free; Kosher D.E. means that it is kosher
but was processed using dairy equipment, so even though it has no dairy
ingredients in it, it cannot be considered pareve.
