I used to think it was a principle of honor not to complain when stiffed for a
payment. Then one day I opened my mouth and complained, and found out everyone
else on the project, including the consultants, had been stiffed as well. A
friend, a consultant, advised that this is what we should be talking about.
Oddly, this lead to PIN, and the same friend turned around and later commented
that with PIN he had no problem if contractors wanted to talk to contractors. I
think he missed something... it is contractors talking to consultants, and
everyone else, and finding out that we all share in common business problems.
Getting paid for our services is a problem for everyone on a preservation
project.
I now make it a point of keeping tabs on the consultant getting paid on a
project. I may not be able to do anything at all, but sometimes I can figure out
what the problem is and help the owner past their hump. We need understand and
function across the entire system, not solely our small cubicle.
If we look to our preservation organizations and they do not assist us in solving
the business problems that contribute to our mutual survival, then what need do
they function to satisfy?
