Regarding the pink mortar thing? Engineering training doesn't dwell on
history of anything other than engineering very much. But I might venture
to exercise the time-tested traditional engineering approach to unknown
matters such as this, known as the WAG method. (When you have no idea, take
a Wild Ass Guess).

So here's mine: Somebody used crushed red brick in the mortar. Red brick
brick dust+ white lime= pink mortar.
