Since her older child is also soy-allergic (and a large percentage of
milk-allergic infants are also soy-allergic) she may wish to avoid the
soy formulas.

Alimentum and nutramigen are dairy-derived. They both contain
hydrolyzed casein, which is a milk protein broken down into small
enough pieces as to be unrecognizable to *most* milk-allergic people.
However my son's doctor did say that 25% of babies who are allergic to
milk also have reactions to the Alimentum or Nutramigen. For anecdotal
value, my own breastfed son, who reacted with blood in his stool and GE
reflux whenever I consumed the slightest quantity of dairy, did fine on
the Alimentum which we had to use for a while while trying to figure
out what other allergens I also needed to remove froom my diet.

I chose the Alimentum over the Nutramigen because the Nutramigen is
sweetened with corn syrup, whcich is more allergenic than the regular
sugar the Alimentum is sweetened with. Also the Alimentum comes in
a 6-pack of 8oz ready-to-serve cans, which is more convenient for
supplementation than the other forms (IMO)

There are other formulas that work for the 25% of babies who
can't tolerate the Alimentum/Nutramigen but I don't believe they
are available without special ordering. There is a formula called
Pregestimil which I believe falls into this category.

Good luck!!
