Introduction
Children love to play! Play is one of the essential
joys of childhood and is the way children learn about
themselves, their environment and the people around
them.
Children learn to get along in the world around them
by observing and imitating the actions of others. Most
children use sight to help them gain a great deal of
information quickly and with little effort. However,
for those children whose vision is impaired, this
important element of childhood is often limited or
missing. It doesn't have to be.
This guide has been developed to assist parents and
caregivers in choosing appropriate toys that enhance
the quality of play for children who are blind or
visually impaired. By examining the types of toys
suggested, a new world of play can be discovered—one
that is filled with valuable experiences of people,
places and things in the environment.

* Inspire children's curiosity to move and explore
* Promote awareness of people, places and things
* Encourage communication with others
* Provide opportunities for social and emotional
growth
* Stimulate children's intellect, imagination and
creativity
* Build skills for recreational activities and
sports
The toys in this guide have been selected by the
American Foundation for the Blind for their interest
to children who are blind or visually impaired -
including those with special needs who have additional
disabilities, such as cerebral palsy, cognitive
impairments or developmental disabilities. They are
also useful for adults who are blind or visually
impaired who want to play with the children in their
lives.
Children with visual impairments, their friends and
teachers, child development specialists, and experts
on product evaluation formed the panel that selected
these commercially available toys. Toys marked with B
and LV will be of interest to children who are blind,
as well as those who have low vision. Toys marked with
LV are best for youngsters with low vision only.
Children with special needs may enjoy playing with
toys where the SN appears. The age ranges for the toys
in this guide were determined by the manufacturer for
children who are not blind or visually impaired; these
ranges may not be appropriate for the youngsters you
have in mind. When selecting toys, be aware that
children develop skills at varying rates, and that a
child's own interests and skills are an excellent
guide for your choices. Be imaginative when selecting
toys for children with special needs, who may enjoy a
unique way of having fun with their toys.
Please remember as you read ahead that this guide
contains examples of toys that children with visual
impairments enjoy. However, these are only 100 toys
among thousands on the market that are fun, safe and
appropriate for children who are blind or visually
impaired, including those who have additional
disabilities.
Enjoy the children in your lives by playing together
and playing often! Most important, remember there is
no substitute for sensible adult supervision of
children's play, and that it is advisable to seek
input from a physician, occupational or physical
therapist if your child with special needs has fine or
gross motor impairments, or other health concerns.
The toys in this guide were selected for the reasons
highlighted below. Use these guidelines to select toys
that are fun and appropriate for children who are
blind, visually impaired or have special needs.
Consider toys that:
Talk or produce sounds. Many of today's toys make use
of exciting interactive technology. Toys that talk or
imitate real life noises attract children's attention
to the world of sounds, help them understand cause and
effect and teach them to use auditory senses
effectively as they grow.
Have bright colors, high contrast and emit light. Toys
with simple contrasting patterns of lines and shapes,
that are brightly colored or light up during play,
stimulate children to use their vision to its best
potential.
Feature a variety of interesting surfaces and
textures. Toys that have dials, switches, buttons and
other surfaces that are fun to touch and operate
encourage children to use their fingers and hands to
explore. Textures introduce children to the way
everyday objects feel. Interesting, flexible or
rubbery surfaces make dolls, rattles and balls
appealing and easy to play with.
Stimulate thinking and creativity. Puzzles, building
toys and railroads help children discover how parts
make up the whole, and stimulate their imagination to
plan and build. Toy letters and numbers marked in
Braille and phonics toys introduce children to the
wonders of learning through reading. Craft kits and
finger paints help enhance creativity.
Encourage movement and exploration. Climbing and
riding toys, athletic equipment and other action toys
engage children in movement and exploration. Physical
activity promotes the growth of strong muscles for
walking, running and sports; toy rattles, finger
puppets and musical toys enhance the development of
fine motor and hand skills, and facilitate graceful
and easy movement.
Promote cooperation, sharing and social growth. Games
and role-playing activities engage children in play
with their friends, families and teachers. Games that
encourage cooperation and sharing build the foundation
of friendship and relationships with others.
Develop awareness of people, places and things. Dolls,
stuffed animals, puppets, vehicles and play towns
introduce the sights and sounds of daily living,
acquaint children with the jobs that people do at home
and at work, and stimulate creative role play.
