CAUTION: I have received this MS DUN v1.3 upgrade BUG REPORT from a concerned

==========*
Subj: New MS-DUN 1.3 Feature (read BUG)... does it slow you down?
From: [log in to unmask] (Ryan Sutton)
To: [log in to unmask]

"Mr George G,

Always wanting faster, quicker, better PC performance.
I made the mistake of downloading and installing Microsoft's latest version
of Dial-Up Networking for Win95 version 1.3.
I should have done my research! After installing this, my transfer speed of a
54 meg text file (my ISP provides for testing modem transfer times) went from
an average of 10.5 Kbytes a second DOWN to 5.2 Kbytes a second.
After browsing a few Win95 tip sites looking for a fix/reason, I came across
a tip where the site's webmaster recommended NOT installing it, and it
pointed to one of Microsoft's wonderful white papers links listed here:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q154/0/91.asp
In short, what the new version does is set the MaxMTU "automatically"
depending on what speed you are connected at. What is good for Microsoft may
not be good for your transfer speeds. Be wary!
Not even using the Rob Vonk's EasyMTU, or your registry "mtu" tweaks
prevented DUN 1.3 from self adjusting.
I apologize that I do not remember the site. I owe thanks to the webmaster
that pointed me towards the right direction. I have now re-installed DUN
upgrade 1.2b.
(1.3 was difficult to get rid of. I had to basically pull out my whole comms
package to get 1.2 upgrade back and working.)

Thanking the Higher Powers for backups.
Ryan Sutton

* FastVid v1.10 PCI/AGP video accelerator for DOS/Windows [28 KB, free]:
http://www.fastgraphics.com/zip/fastv110.zip
Eric's FastVid page @ Fast Graphics:
http://www.fastgraphics.com/fastvid.html
FastVid enables Write Posting (WP), Banked VGA Write Combining (BVGAWC) and
Linear Frame Buffer Write Combining (LFBWC) modes on your PCI/AGP video card,
in DOS and Windows. Doesn't use ANY memory.
You MUST HAVE a Pentium Pro or Pentium II class CPU to use FastVid!
NOTE: FastVid is NOT compatible with Microsoft EMM386.EXE or ANY other DOS
memory manager (i.e. Quarterdeck QEMM, Helix Netroom, IBM 386MAX,
etc)! Therefore you MUST use only HIMEM.SYS in your Config.sys, or
better, install UMBPCI.SYS (see topic below), to provide access to
the Upper Memory Area (UMA) and load devices/drivers/TSRs high!

* UMBPCI.SYS v2.18 by Uwe Sieber, using c't Magazine's free source code [5
KB, free]:
http://home.t-online.de/home/UweSieber/umbpci_e.zip
Upper Memory Area (UMA) access driver (HIMEM.SYS extender) for Intel/VIA/SiS
PCI chipsets using Pentium/Pentium II/AMD/Cyrix CPUs.
Uwe Sieber's UMBPCI page:
http://home.t-online.de/home/UweSieber/umbpci_e.html
Add a DEVICE line for UMBPCI.SYS in Config.sys, AFTER the HIMEM.SYS line, and
use DEVICEHIGH (in Config.sys) and LOADHIGH (in Autoexec.bat) to load ALL
devices/drivers/TSRs high properly!
Takes only 240 Bytes of conventional memory, and allows up to 629 KB of free
low DOS memory.
Provides access to the Upper Memory Blocks (UMBs) in the C800-EFFF range for
loading DOS devices/drivers/TSRs high, WITHOUT the need for an
extended/expanded DOS memory manager (i.e. Microsoft EMM386.EXE, Quarterdeck
QEMM386.SYS, Helix NetRoom RM386.exe, Qualitas 386MAX, etc).
More UMBPCI.SYS info + details:
http://users.aol.com/axcel216/umb.htm
UMBPCI.SYS is IDEAL for using FastVid (see topic above), ONLY IF you own a
Pentium Pro or Pentium II CPU!

* SciTech Software new version 6.53 of Display Doctor Universal VESA VBE
(VESA BIOS Extensions) 3.0 + 2.0 Video Accelerated Drivers + Tools Package:
UNIVBE works in 32-bit protected DOS mode. It is a complete set of video
acceleration and calibration tools that support most video cards and
monitors, in ANY text, graphics, VGA/SVGA modes, ANY number of colors, in
MS-DOS (v3.3 and above) and MS Windows (v3.0 and above).
SciTech Display Doctor home:
http://www.scitechsoft.com/sdd.html
Even the newer 64bit and 128bit video adapters (that don't have VESA 2.0 or
3.0 support built into the hardware) can benefit greatly from these drivers,
especially in SVGA graphics modes!
NEW FEATURES: DirectX 2 support, VESA 3.0 standard, Stereo Hardware Flipping
support, Serial Control Interface support, and a very long list of supported
video chipsets.
UNIVBE.EXE v6.53 TSR takes 22 KB of DOS memory. Doesn't fit in upper memory
if you load EMM386.EXE with expanded memory enabled! Therefore add the NOEMS
switch to the EMM386.EXE line in Config.sys.
UNIVBE is known to accelerate ALL DOS/Windows graphics intensive applications
and games noticeably (on ALL video cards that don't have the new VESA support
built-in the hardware), because a lot of newer DOS accelerated games use the
VESA 2.0 video standard. UNIVBE can also patch eventual bugs in your video
controller!
NOTE: SciTech Display Doctor is provided as SHAREWARE (21 days free
evaluation). READ the included documentation for details!
HINT: If you have a newer PCI/AGP video controller with VESA 2.0/3.0
support built into the card, you may not need these drivers/tools!
