You can have as many hard drives as your controller(s) support. The vast
majority or PCI....Pentium and above.... motherboards come with a on board
Primary and Secondary controller.....each of which can support two hard
drives .....a Master and a Slave.
Older 486 ISA boards ...and their Bios .....often came with one IDE
channel and could not support drives above 512 megabytes. The solution to
this is to purchase a add in controller ....like GSI or Promise ......which
will update your existing bios and or operate as a second controller giving
you two channel 4 big drive support.
