IMHO turnips are Neander OK. They do not, in their uncooked state, contain
the dangerous alkaloids which can render raw potatoes a threat. They are
not from the nightshade family.
As many respondents state - they are peppery in flavour. This is a clue to
their connection with rape, kale, cabbage and others of that family.
As a boy I often tried them raw with no ill effects - although they are not
very appetising!. I can easily imagine HGs, armed with their trusty stick,
digging them up - albeit smaller versions of what we have today.
Who are those Neander-police who arbitrarily assign good/bad labels? Lets
see some evidence for such pronouncements. Surely if you can't rule it out
it's in!
