Let me roil the pot further. I am a Canadian so our medical system is
different than just about any one else's.

My family doctor, a very thorough and concerned man, diagnosed the LI many
years ago. He told me to drink a glass of milk on an empty stomach and I
had a very bad day with the whole panoply of LI symptoms. I then started
chewing Lactaid pills big time. However, I started running into periods
where I did not feel well. They would last 3-4 weeks at times. I began to
suspect something else was wrong. I went back to my doctor and discussed it
with him. He couldn't help. I was also suffering from 4 sinus infections a
year. I wondered if my problems were related to that. My Dr. sent to me an
E-N-T specialist who arranged a cat scan which indicated my sinuses were
fine. Since I had very recently had my annual check-up, the only other
possibility, in my mind, was food and dairy to be specific. I stopped all
dairy immediately. I have had 2 sinus infections in 4 years vs. 4 per year
prior to that stop. I don't have bouts of feeling slightly ill that last
weeks. They last for 2 days if I eat something with dairy. I have tried soy
cheeses and real(?) cheeses with casein but probably not whey (they were
lactose free). I have had no reaction that I've noticed. But eat anything
with whey in it, I start to react and that includes most margarines. Now,
there may be some other protein/whatever in dairy that is affecting me. I'm
not a chemist (I'm an Engineer/Computer Geek, retired). But my regimen
works. The famous elimination diet is a well known and well accepted
medical technique. I just modified it to fit my circumstances. I would have
been more rigourous had I needed to. All I can say is that it worked for
me. I hope this helps.
