From the low-carb support list today:

Yesterday I received the Sept/Oct issue of the Purdue Alumnus magazine.
In it was an interesting article +ACI-Red Meat May Help Prevent
Diabetes+ACI-.

I quote from the article: +ACI-A common type of fat found in red meats
and cheeses may prevent diabetes, according to a research team from
Purdue and Pennsylvania State University. This information could lead to
new drugs to help fight diabetes, or to improved dietary strategies to
manage diabetes, the researchers say. the study found that conjugated
linoleic acid, a fatty acid know to scientists as CLA can prevent the
onset of diabetes in laboratory animals, at least in the short term.
Researchers say CLA appears to work as well as a new class of
diabetes-fighting drugs, the thiazolidinediones or TZD's.

Martha Belury, Purdue assistant professor of foods and nutrition says
+ACI- Our study suggests that CLA may help normalize or reduce blood
glucose levels and prevent diabetes. CLA is a polyunsaturated fat found
in meats and cheeses, and in lesser amounts in milk, yogurt, eggs and
cooking oil.+ACI- I am glad to see that my alma mater is pursuing
research that supports this WOE. I had gestational diabetes for one of
my three pregnancies, and my doctor warned that I may be prone to develop
Type II diabetes later in life. I'm glad to know that this WOE may
prevent that from happening.

Hail Purdue+ACE-

Karen
