Dear Listmates,
I am hoping some of you might help me with the following situation:  I have
a patient whom originally came to me complaining of iron deficiency,
fatigue and significant "irritable bowel syndrome"-like symptoms.  Amongst
her screening tests I performed, she had an anti-gliadin IgA test come back
in the positive range.  I advised her that I thought she was gluten
intolerant.  She subsequently sought a second opinion with a
gastroenterologist who performed a D-xylose absorption study which came
back in the normal range.  He advised her that she did not have gluten
intolerance because all people with it would test abnormally.  I am not
convinced of that fact, however.  Now, my patient is understandably wanting
to favor the other doc's opinion.  I wanted to perhaps give her more
information to work with.  My specific question is:   have any of you had
"normal" absorption studies findings prior to you being diagnosed and while
still eating at least some gluten?  If so, I would like to share your
experiences with my patient and try to help her see that gluten intolerance
is not ruled out.  The voice of experience often speaks out loud and clear.
