This is a summary of info received in response
to my post for local restaurant info (esp.
Chinese restaurants). Many thanks to all who
responded. Info is also available on my
     website:

        http://www.brandtbeach.com/celiac

Any additional info is welcome. Please send it.

I have no financial interest in or relationship with
     any restaurant listed here.

     1) Steakhouses

        Most responses mentioned steakhouses since
a steak and potato is a fairly safe meal.

Lone Star Steak House, Hares Corner, Wilm, DE
responder ate there several times w/o problems
Steak and Ale, Midway Shopping Center, Wilm.
        Sizzler, Kirkwood Highway
I've eaten here. The butter doesn't
                bother me.
        Ground Round, Newark, DE
responder had nice meal, staff very helpful
        Outback Steak House, Kirkwood Highway
responder had mixed results. 1st time good,
2nd time meat covered w/ a brown sauce, not GF.

     2) Miscellaneous

Ship Inn, Route 30, Exton, PA
Chef's name is Jack, made recommendation's,
                responder had a good meal.
        Mariott, Conshohocken, PA
Chef knows about CD, call ahead, will
                prepare GF meal.
        Phillips, Ocean City, MD
                Responder reported fantastic meal, staff
bent over backwards. I've eaten there
several times (never on the GF diet) and
the food is top notch. Quality restaurant.

     3) Asian

        Thai Classic restaurant, Eldersburg, MD
Bob Levy planned a meal here for about
40 people. Most were members of the Baltimore
support group. The trip from Wilmington was
well worthwhile. Everything was GF. Many
things were right off the menu. Bob plans
events like this an a regular basis. His
address is [log in to unmask]
        Hunan Wok, Greenspring Shopping Center,
                NW Baltimore, MD
Responder says: "makes all their sauces with
cornstarch, so the white sauces are safe there,
and they will even make spicy sauces without
the soy sauce if you ask someone who speaks
                pretty good English".
        Hibachi, North Wilmington, DE
Responder tried to talk with owner, basically
                got brushed off

In regard to Chinese food, the choices seem to be:

        1) Eat steamed food
        2) White sauces usually OK, colored usually aren't
        3) Know the chef, some let you bring your own GF
soy sauce and they will cook with it.
        4) Learn to cook Asian cuisine at home

Many thanks to one responder who sent me a piece of
paper with a Chinese translation of the card she uses
in restaurants. I used it today at my favorite take-out
place. Was steered to the "low fat / healthy" section
of menu that contained steamed dishes. Also bought
the hot-and-sour soup. Not quite sure the person OK'd
this or not. He seemed to but I'll know for sure tomorrow
(probably was a mistake but I just can't live w/o spice).

If I can get a good scan of the paper, I'll put the image on
my website so that it can be printed by anyone who wants a
copy. One person, like me, worried that with a language barrier,
the person in the restaurant would say "yes" to everything.
The person who read it this afternoon took it seriously and
     obviously tried to understand.

Note: If there are web pages that contain restaurant info for
other areas, please send me the URL.
