I had this happen to my USR Courier x2 when I upgraded to Win98
and it happened to my USR Sportster when I installed WinNT4.

The only way I could get the right connect speed to show was to
change to a different modem.inf file** and reinstall the modem. (The
modem.inf file (for my modem) that came with Win98 did not work.)

[**] Note: the actual name of the file I called modem.inf varies.
It will be located in the c:\windows\inf folder and will likely
be named mdmxxxxx.inf where xxxxx depends on the modem
    manufacturer and model.)

Find a different modem.inf file for your modem. (Download one from the
manufacturer's website, or use one that came on CD or floppy with your
modem. Put the file on floppy or in a folder on your hard drive.) The
new file does not have to have the exact same file name as the old one.

"Remove" your modem from Control Panel, Modems. Then "Add" a "new"
modem. Do not let Win98 search for (detect) the new modem, but tell
Win98 that you will select from a list. When the list comes up, do not
pick from the list but instead choose "Have disk" and then "browse"
to point Win98 to the floppy or hard disk folder containing the
desired modem.inf file. (If you let Win98 redetect the modem, or select
a modem from the list, you will likely get the same modem properties
as you had before, along with the same problem.)

Win98 replaced the modem.inf file that came with my modem (installed
before I upgraded to Win98) with a new one from Microsoft. The old file
mdmusrcr.inf (from the US Robotics CDROM) works fine and the file I use
now (downloaded), mdmcrv90.inf, works fine. (Note: my Courier is not
V90 but this file works the best.)

Regards,
Bill
