      Have you tried to set up hardware profiles so you can easily "turn
off"
  different devices for long periods for testing purposes.  My Zip (PP)
is
  in a hardware profile, and the system does't care if it is connected or
not...
  Search Win95 help, find,   type "profiles", select "Creating...."
  for more details.
      Get the correct, newest drivers too, as always...
