I have almost the same system and though I have Photoshop (which I use
only occasionally) I am using more of Corel Draw 8 Graphic Suite and
most of the plug-ins which Photoshop uses also works with PhotoPaint8,
which is now better and faster. Check the documentation of the
additional plug-ins you will need if it will work with 32 bit systems
before using any. What I ended up for lessening my files, if I have to
send it via jpg to another computer is Micrograpfx Picture Publisher,
although Photopaint can also lower the mbs but not as good yet as PP.
You can use Corel Draw on all your digital drawings and transform them
to bitmaps and can edit it through Photopaint or scan your photos and
edit it as a vector based image in Corel Draw. Other programs you might
want to consider is HiResQ FX but the price might not suit. Most graphic
programs nowadays can do countless of things others can do but if you
just want a small program you will end up installing a few more "other"
programs to make up for the special effects others don't have. I am not
a representative of Corel, but I have used their product since after
version 1. I have used other products, too but Corel is just easier, not
to mention, cheaper, without the sacrifices.

Working on large graphic images requires you to have more than what you
have as your HD as they got filled up easily with .tmp files that is one
of the reason for the lockup. Saving your work frequently, works, too.
Sometimes we tend to get too busy to click the Save button until the
.tmp files are already hogging the system.

Write me privately if you need to know more.
