Suzanne,
  Sometimes the reactions are very apparent as they are severe and immediate and
sometimes it will take a few reactions for you to pinpoint the item.  An
allergist can do a number of tests to determine allergies but none of them are
100%.  They go by a good background interview and the results of the tests.  My
son had skin prick testing and in our case it was very accurate.
