In Pentium II (and Pentium Pro) systems, any L2 caching is done by
the CPU package, and not by the chipset.
To date, most PIIs[*] include 512K of L2 cache, and the cache can
span either 1 GB or 4 GB. 4 GB is the full physical address space of
the CPU, and 1 GB is the most memory you can physically install on
high-end commercial motherboards.
[*] Current versions of Celeron have NO L2 cache. I haven't checked
out Xeon yet.
The issue you're concerned about applies only to some Pentium
(Socket 7, so includes AMD and Cyrix) chipsets.
