Perhaps the card's refresh rate at its current resolution is not supported
by the monitor.  This could cause it to go black.  Have you tried shifting
to a lower resolution and seeing if the same thing happens?

Does the monitor go black while no other activity is taking place?  It may
just also be the power-saving features of the card or monitor kicking in.
