Dear Paleo list,
Awhile back, some paleo folk requested info on the MCS List, finally, here
it is.
If you have any questions on cleaners, detergents, air filters, allergies,
consumer products, shampoos, etc etc, this is the list where you can ask and
get a very knowledgeable answer.

Kathy asked: What is Washing Soda.
Kathy.. Washing Soda is Sodium Carbonate. It is available through
swimming pool dealers in its pure form as a pH increaser. Even the WalMart
carries it in the summer season called pH Up. Just look on the container
to be sure it is pure sodium carbonate without any additives.
The Arm & Hammer Washing Soda available in the supermarket has fragrance
and others junk added to it.
Washing soda is a very strong and very useful cleaner. It is not toxic,
but can be harsh and drying to your skin. It works very well when added
to any cleaning solution or to the laundry. I use about two tablespoons,
dissolved first in hot water, for laundry that is extra dirty and/or has
stains. If you use too much it will damage the fibers of your clothing
because it will raise the pH too high.
Another good use of washing soda is to scour new clothing or new
fabrics....it will definitely do a good job of removing sizing, chemical
finishes, etc....but again you need to be careful not to overdo it and
damage the fabric.

For general cleaning, it will remove dirt, wax, etc....but also can remove
paint, and you need to be somewhat careful when using it, and it can leave
a film, so it needs good rinsing.
