I prefer external for these reasons:

1. No power drain and extra heat in a loaded computer case.

2. Independent of operating system - although in most cases the internal
does look like just another serial port.

3. In case lightning hits the phone line, there is less chance of frying the
mother board, as happened to a friend of mine!

4. I have had problems with internal modems talking on a fast bus.
