There are two physical CD-ROm drives on the chain.

I have tried this way back and it made no difference...
I have finally had to go to another brand of SCSI adapter. A Bus Logic
BT-542B.
This card shows the say type of problem upon initializing the cards driver,
but when
the CD-ROM driver is loaded, it correctly configure to only two CD-ROM drives.
The Bus Logic card is a discontinued card we found in our spare parts pile.
Go figure....
