There is merit to what you say.  But there is also merit to what
the other camp says too.  Personally, I turn my machine on at the
beginning of the day and shut it down in the late evening.

I have an APC brand UPS, it cost me under $100 and has a lifetime
equipment replacement guarantee.... cheap insurance in my book.

All I have to do is remember to stick a tape in to archive my data.
