Steve, I agree with you.  The problem is not these devices, it is that they
have an off switch which it may not be acceptable to use.  That is the
shame of it.  If I travel with a cell phone and it gives me a way to
contact someone if I need them, then it is good, but if having one means I
am always at someone's call, then it is too much.

I think the off switch is really what determines who is master and who is
slave.
