RIck,
Sally Falon's book, Nourishing Traditions, covers information concerning the
contrast of modern food choices and preparation techniques with the way man
has nourished himself for thousands of years. The Preface of the book starts
by stating that modern food with its many fad dictums of nutrition has
severely compromised our health and vitality. Diets of "primitive" population
groups untouched by modern civilization from all over the world were
researched by a dentist, Dr. Weston Price, who found almost without exception,
these groups ate liberally of seafood or other animal proteins and fats,
fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds and whole grains in their natural,
unrefined state. There are references to research that covers hunter/gather
groups which fall under the Paleo prototype model that Neanderthin is based
upon. The book does include information of preindustrial agricultural diets,
which goes in a different direction in recommending grains and dairy foods. So
it's a helpful resource, but not explicitly a paleo guide. Sally Fallon has
been on the PaleoFood list page numerous times and is extremely fascinating
concerning her research on saurated fats from animal sources. If you get a
chance to read it, check out the Introduction of the book which thoroughly
covers all types of edible fats in an informative manner.
