Hello, I am writing today to find another parent who has a child that has
IgA Deficiency. Spencer, who has improved greatly in the past months from
PDD dx, was tested for Celiac by his gastroenterologist last week. He used
a blood test. There are 4 panels in the test, and he tested negative to 3,
but positive to 1. So, his md says he probably isn't Celiac, but it may
indicate an immune system disorder called IgA Deficiency. So, we went
again for another blood test (poor Spencer!), and are waiting for the
results, then I guess we will be seeing a pediatric immunologist. Here I
thought I had seen every specialist possible. Anyway, we got a lot of good
information from Teresa Binstock - (thanks so much for your help, you are
so kind to have sent so much info) - I'd really like to hear from another
parent about what impact this sort of dx has on your child's life, how you
cope, how it changes his development, etc. We have felt very strongly all
along that Spencer was sick, only it was such a vague situation, lots of
ear infections, intestinal problems, etc. Now we have a direction, and he
has really improved so much since that PDD dx - I can't help but wonder if
other parents have kids who presented to be in the autistic spectrum, but
the real "cause" of the extremely difficult behaviors and lack of
appropriate language/social/etc development was illness, more specifically,
an immune system dysfunction. Also, it looks like we really are faced with
the gluten free life (now he is dairy/egg free) - with 3 other kids, I am
wondering if the whole house has to be gf/cf - Thanks!
