Our favorite icing is home-made, and *very* simple: we use pareve margarine
in stick form (typically Fleischmanns pareve stick margarine), lots of
powdered sugar, a little vanilla, and occasionally a few drops of
water. Whips up pretty stiff and tastes great. Shortening could be
substituted for the margarine, and may work better, since it's more solid
at room temp.
