Hello Heidi and Carolyn and any one else interested.
I have a milk free and wheat free pre-school child who improved
dramatically in his speech and behavior when I changed his diet.
I pack Paul's snacks for his special speech class (3 mornings a week)
and provide some foods for his regular daycare provider to use for him
(for example, a 5 pound jar of Dari-free, rice crackers, frozen
waffles, boxes of cereal). I also gave her some pretty clear
instructions on what to look for on labels, etc. This is the easy
part.
It gets tough when we go to places where food is out for the taking,
such as a party or the coffee hour after church. I have to have a
substitute goodie in my pocket or Paul heads right into the doughnuts
and milk.
His doctor thinks this is an allergy that he will outgrow. I'm not
convinced. I have celiac and honestly think that he does also. We
will pursue more testing after the school year is over -- I don't want
to challenge him with wheat while he is in a structured learning
environment.
Good luck with the testing. The diet really isn't that hard once you
get used to cooking ALL the time.
