I have much the same problem where I can't tolerate the proteins (even
things that claim to be lactose free), but I don't have a very positive
scratch test.  Some allergist apparently call this an "intolerance", but
not necessarily a Lactose Intolerance.  Sometimes it's a matter of
symatics is what I'm finding out.

You're right though - end result is the same - no dairy!
