All,
I've seen lots of discussion about missing calcium in a no-milk diet, but what about missing fat? Small children (those under 3)
need LOTS of fat in their diets - 35 to 56 grams per day! Without dairy (or nuts), I'm finding this difficult.
I'm also very concerned when I see that parents have their toddlers on Rice milk or soy milk instead of soy formula (ok, there is no rice formula) because those products don't contain nearly enough fat for small children. Studies have proven that a high fat diet is essential for brain development (among other things) for small children.
My son's formula only provides 33% of his daily fat needs. Since he can have no dairy or nuts, I have a difficult time finding enough fat for his diet, because I refuse to succomb to the "eat the french fries - they're good for you" mentality. Some high-fat junk food has become essential to his diet, but I don't like to encourage this habit.
Does anyone else have any 'healthy high-fat' (don't laugh) ideas?
