If there's a history of allergy in the family, don't even think about it.
While you may be fine after a couple of hours, you might not be after a
couple of months. And by that time, you'll be hooked (they can be wonderful
companions) and in nearly complete denial that your symptoms are due to the
dog. And, even if they're not, there will be more hair, more sloughed skin,
and therefore more dust and mites.
