Is it lactose intolerance or dairy allergy? You can usually tell by the
symptoms: dairy allergy can manifest itself as hives, rashes, anaphylaxis,
asthma, and even in vomiting. Lactose intolerance usually manifests itself
in gas, bloating, and diarrhea.
I have both. My son is highly allergic. We've never given him enough
lactose to see if he's also lactose intolerant.
It's very hard, but not impossible, to manage a milk-free diet. There are a
few books on diary-free diets, and there is a growing number of really
tasty substitutes, including soy and rice milks, a few sorbets that taste
like good ice cream, and other foods such as dairy-free frozen waffles.
There are precious few dairy-free margarines and breads, but they do exist
and they're as good and as tasty as those with dairy.
