For anyone interested in a "cure" for LI, you can forget
trying to force your body into accepting or adjusting to
it. A doctor friend mentioned to me about 30 years ago
(I'm 56) that if you avoid lactose altogether then your body
would further decrease the amount of lactase necessary
to digest lactose and things would get even worse. So
last year I ate milk products instead of avoiding them
altogether in hopes that my digestive tract would adjust.
I did this for almost 5 months, and after many of the
typical discomforting trips to the bathroom, near-
embarrassing moments, and a worse case of
hemorrhoids, I came to the conclusion that his theory
was unfounded -- back when information on LI was
scarce and not really accurate.
I hope my experience will keep others from repeating
this fruitless and uncomfortable little experiment and
realize that LI generally only gets gradually worse with
age and not better, no matter what we do. But, on the
positive side, we DO now know how to control (or avoid)
it.
