----------
Developed by Project ASSIST with Windows, this tutorial provides
guidance on using Window-Eyes with Windows 95.
I combined the archive of exercise files with the ASCII text format
of the tutorial in this larger, single archive. When
uncompressing the exercise files, remember to allow the creation
of directories, since the tutorial refers to them. With the
PKWARE utilities for example, enter the following command at a
prompt for a DOS command:
pkunzip -d exercise.zip

Welcome to the Microsoft Windows 95 with Window-Eyes 2.1
Tutorial for Beginners. This tutorial contains introductory
information and step-by-step instructions for performing
basic Windows 95 functions while reading the screen with
Window-Eyes 2.1. The information in this tutorial is limited
to that which will help the beginning user get started.
How To Use This Tutorial: This tutorial defines basic
Windows 95 concepts and gives you a chance to gain some
hands-on experience with Windows 95. This tutorial assumes
you are new to the Windows environment. It also assumes you
are familiar with the layout of your keyboard. If you do not
know the keyboard layout, obtain the necessary assistance to
locate the following keys before you begin: Alt key, Ctrl
key, Escape key, Number pad keys, Intermediate pad keys,
Shift keys, Tab key, Backspace key, Delete key, and Function
keys.
When you are ready to begin the tutorial, you should be
sitting at your computer with Windows 95 and Window-Eyes 2.1
running. The steps listed in the exercises assume you
reviewed the introductory information and, in most cases,
completed the previous exercises. Once you have finished
working through the tutorial, you should be able to perform
tasks similar to those outlined here on your own.
You are recommended to take a break after each lesson.
Because of its length, you are given the opportunity to take
two breaks in Lesson Three: Using the My Computer Window.
Former Windows 3.1 Users: For those making the transition
from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95, refer to Appendix B: New
Windows Features - Windows 95. This appendix includes
information about some of the changes you can expect in
Windows 95. If you are a former Windows 3.1 user, read this
appendix before beginning Lesson One: MS Windows 95
Overview.
Tutorial Format: This tutorial uses the following
conventions.
Keys connected with a hyphen indicate you must press the
keys simultaneously. For example, the command "Press Alt-F
to pull down the File menu" directs you to press the Alt key
and the F key simultaneously in order to pull down the File
menu.
This tutorial assumes you are familiar with the layout of
your keyboard.
Information spoken by Window-Eyes appears in quotation
marks.
Important! The amount and type of information Window-
Eyes reads depends on your computer and your Window-
Eyes settings. Since each computer setup can be unique,
you may notice a difference in the information Window-
Eyes reads as you perform the exercises in this
tutorial and the information that this tutorial
indicates Window-Eyes reads. The computer and Window-
Eyes settings used while creating this tutorial are
listed in Appendix C: Our Equipment and Settings.
Once you become experienced with Windows 95, you will find
that several methods to complete the same task exist. This
tutorial does not list every method for completing a task.
Instead, the exercise steps always use the fewest number of
steps to accomplish a task without compromising the user's
understanding of the task. Generally, a topic may list one
or two methods for completing the task.
For reference, a list of Windows 95 and Window-Eyes
keystrokes appears in Appendix A: Common Window-Eyes and
Windows 95 Keystrokes.
Obtaining Additional Copies or Alternate Formats Of This
Tutorial: All tutorials are available free of charge in
three formats: Microsoft Word 6.0, ASCII Text, and a Braille
intermediate file which can produce Braille without using a
Braille translation program. To download the tutorial from
the World Wide Web, go to www.blind.state.ia.us/assist. To
obtain a free cassette version, contact Project ASSIST with
Windows, Iowa Department for the Blind at (515)281-1338, or
place an order from the web site.
About Project ASSIST With Windows: To help ease the
transition to the Windows environment, the Iowa Department
for the Blind began work on Project ASSIST With Windows
(Accessible Step-by-Step Instructions for Speech Technology
With Windows). ASSIST With Windows is being funded by a
three-year Special Project grant from the U.S. Department of
Education, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative
Services (Federal Grant Number: H235U60092).
The purpose of ASSIST With Windows is to create and
disseminate tutorials and configuration and documentation
materials for Windows based applications used in conjunction
with a screen reader application. Each tutorial will focus
on a different combination of Windows application and screen
reader. These materials will enable individuals who are
blind to quickly and effectively learn to use Microsoft
Windows and Windows applications with major screen reading
software packages. The materials will cover Windows (3.X and
'95) and the following Windows applications: Microsoft
Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, and Internet Explorer),
Corel Office Suite (WordPerfect, Quattro Pro, and Paradox),
Lotus Smart Suite (Word Pro, Lotus 1,2,3 and Approach), and
Netscape Navigator. The tutorials will provide step-by-step
instructions for beginner, intermediate, and advanced users
and will be made available on cassette, as well as in
electronic formats that can be used to produce Braille or
large print versions.
All materials created by the project will be posted on our
web site at www.blind.state.ia.us/assist where anyone can
download and utilize the information.
For further information about ASSIST With Windows, contact
Shan Sasser at (515)281-1338.
A Special Thank You: The ASSIST staff would like to
acknowledge GW Micro for their cooperation and technical
support. We also thank them for their generous donation of
the software used to create this tutorial.
