I have looked into upgrading a Dell also and found that many of the
components could be reused (modem, video card, hdd, etc) however the
motherboard and cpu combination was maxed out [ie the motherboard would not
support a faster cpu] and the motherboard and case were designed to be used
together with custom built features just for that motherboard.
In a case such as this, you are looking at replacing the case, motherboard
and cpu but are free to purchase these components such that anything that is
usable [memory for instance] can be incorporated into the new machine.
