yes, the klunk has always been there, with the high pitched sound only
recently, as if the klunking hinge needs oil!

yes, this makes sense.

ok, I will isolate the speakers to check on possible card
interference. Because the monitor is still under warranty, I am
exchanging it & can additionally isolate the problem. Tech support at
at the vendor had no fixes to suggest other than replacement.
