I have seen all kinds of read errors with the faster CD-ROM drives, but
never any HDD problems caused by vibration. This, of course, doesn't mean
that it can't happen. Have your dealer replace the CD-ROM with something
more standard (read: slower), like a 8x drive (can you even buy these
anymore?).

Fix up the errors with Norton Disk Doctor or equivalent. If your problems
continue, you will at least have ruled out the CD-ROM drive as the cause.
