Saw exactly the same thing with a western digital with EZ.  According
to western digital [and they should know?] you cannot merely format
the drive.  You must boot to the overlay, select uninstall [or remove]
then format.  I did exactly that, and it worked.  Maxtor has the
overlay on their web site.  I would dnld it, try booting to it, and
see if you can kill the beast.  Then format....
