CALL FOR PAPERS
The Institute for the African Child at Ohio University will be holding its
fourth annual conference, 'HIV/AIDS and the African ChildHealth Challenges,
Educational Possibilities', from 11-13 April 2002. Scholars interested in
participating should send a one-page abstract by January 15th to Mr. Abdul

African Media Conference, “Reporting Africa in the US Media” will take
place on March 8, 2002 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
The conference is organized by the Center for African Studies and

EMPLOYMENT
Ohio University, Athens, Ohio-International Theater
Ohio University School of Theater seeks a senior professor with a record of
study, publication and/or practice in international theater for a newly
created position. This PhD position may conduct courses within the
University in conjunction with other programs such as African Studies,
Latin American Studies, Asian studies – as appropriate to the scholar’s

Ohio University-African Dance
Ohio University is accepting applications for a newly created position in
African/Jazz dance. The selected candidate will teach and develop studio
courses in African dance, jazz dance technique and other technique
offerings for both majors and non-majors. Deadline for application:

The University of Pennsylvania-African Language Coordinator
The University of Pennsylvania looks to hire a candidate to serve as
African Language Coordinator in the African Studies Center. Ph.D. in
Linguistics, Language Education, or related field required, as well as
experience in African language teaching at all levels of language

FELLOWSHIPS
FLAS
The African Studies Program administers a program of Higher Education Act
Title VI graduate fellowships for the study of African languages and area
studies. These Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships seek to
improve language and international studies in the United States. Proposed
African languages which are eligible for the FLAS program at the UW-Madison
are Arabic, Hausa, Swahili, Yoruba, and Zulu* . Michigan State University
will hold the Summer Cooperative African Language Institute (SCALI). Please

offerings for summer 2002.
The fellowships cover tuition and a stipend for one academic year or for
one summer. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.
Applications by students in professional fields are encouraged. Fellows
must be admitted to, or be currently enrolled in, a graduate or
professional degree program at the UW-Madison.
FLAS awards may be used for dissertation research in the U.S., or abroad,
with the approval of Department of Education.
Both academic year and summer FLAS applications are available at the
African Studies Program, 205 Ingraham. Application deadline is February

IFESH
The International Foundation for Education and Self-Help (IFESH) is
offering nine-month field work opportunities for college senior and
graduate students in a variety of Sub-Saharan countries. Fellows work in
organizations such as CARE, Save the Children, UNICEF, Africare and other
community-based organizations. Applicants must be U.S.
citizens. Application deadline: February 28. For more information consult

The Five Colleges African Studies Council, Massachusetts, is seeking
African scholars from African universities to join its residency program.
Five College consortium includes Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount
Holyoke College, Smith College, and the University of Massachusetts

Sebagenzi wa Lulenga received his PhD in African Languages & Literature in
the 80's. He writes: “Today I wish to inform you that I edited the
writings of the my niece's late son who was murdered in Tennessee four
years ago. It is a collection of poems and short-stories. The title of the
book is"U Need to See Through Me," and the publisher is Africa World Press,
Inc. The cost is $13.50 for the book plus shipping.”
STUDY ABROAD
UW-River falls is offering a study tour to Uganda from July 8-26,
2002. The theme is 'Africa's Response to Globalization', and it is open to

The Council on International Education Exchange offers a variety of study
abroad programs for students, including programs to Tunisia, South Africa

World Learning offers a variety of study abroad programs, including a

The Center for Global Education at Augsburg College is offering semester
programs for both the fall and spring semester in Namibia. The fall
program runs from September 2 - December 13, 2002, and is titled
"Multicultural Societies in Transition Southern African Perspectives". The
spring program runs from January 27 - May 9, 2003, under the title "Nation
Building, Globalization, and Decolonizing the Mind". For more information
