EVENTS

Art Exhibit:                    "Village and City: Photographs of Sierra Leone, West
Africa." An exhibition of photos by Professor Vera Viditz-Ward ( Art,
Bloomsburg University) is being exhibited for six weeks at the Memorial
Union Gallery. The photographs are selected from work produced over the
past decade during prolonged stays in Sierra Leone. These images of
contemporary Sierra Leone present a unique visual document of a people
living through an on-going war and surviving continuing political and
economic crisis.

CONFERENCES

Second Annual History of Childhood and Youth Conference, July 27 and 28,
2001, Marquette University, Milwaukee. The theme of the conference will
consider what role children have played in shaping cultures/societies; and
what role have institutions and discourses played in shaping children's

Compton Peace Fellowship Program Training UW-Madison African Doctoral
Students for Careers in Africa

The goal of the Compton Peace Fellowship Program is to build intellectual
capacity to address the challenges of conflict resolution, peace, and
security in Africa. The grant supports dissertation fieldwork in Africa
conducted by UW-Madison graduate students who are citizens of an African
country, and who plan to focus their careers on African problems, ideally
from an African home base. Deadline for application: March 1, 2001.
