I remember seeing something like that in the days of the floppy drive.
If you accidently put a 40 track (360k) drive in place of an 80 (720k) on a system configured for an 80, it would work until it
hit the stop, knocking noise?

Mabe the drive has a fault that causes it to do a double step?

Can you read disks from another system?
