Dear Listmates,

Recently I asked the question 'What lead to your celiac diagnosis?' of the
group. I got a volume of detailed replies which the listowners kindly
helped to edit. They are in a temp file on the listserv and can be
accessed as indicated below. A brief summary of these interesting stories
has resulted in the following information:

1) many people initially discouraged by the dietary restrictions feel so
much better after the GF diet that the inconveniences are well worth the
effort to stay GF
2) there often seem to be major health triggers (eg.childbirth) that
precede diagnosis
3) many people self-diagnosed or worked with DR's to achieve a diagnosis
while others had several other diagnoses before being given a celiac one
by their DR, some came immediately to a CD diagnosis from a DR.

major symptoms prior to diagnosis included:

stomach cramps, diarrhea, weight loss, IgA deficiency, DH, iron
deficiency/anemia, b12/folate deficiency, chronic fatigue, migraine,
muscle pain, joint pain, sleepiness after ingestion of gluten,
depression/tiredness/grouchiness, shortness of breath.

The detailed information provided is very interesting and may be of use to
those who aren't sure if they have CD at this point as well as to those
who have similar experiences.

Thankyou to everyone who took the time to tell their experiences in such
detail and also to the listowners (Mike in particular), who trimmed the
information into manageable size!

Lissy
(my story is number 8 on the file if anybody wants more detail to do with
migraine).
