Again here I am summarizing. But this time about vitamin E. It seems some
people are concerned about this potentially containing gluten. And it seems
that it's possible, if the base is wheat germ oil. I was mostly concerned
about my lipsticks, because I gnaw my lips from time to time, and I'm sure I
ingest some lipstick. I have shampoo that has wheat germ oil in it, but my
skin isn't very sensitive to gluten (unless I eat it) and I'm not planning to
eat any shampoo.
I was surprised to find that most major brands of lipstick do not even have an
ingredients list on the box or container. This distressed me, because I think
this should be illegal. Now that I'm eating much differently from before, I
can't imagine purchasing and using a product if I had no idea what was in it!
However, I wrote E-mail to various companies (Maybelline, Cover Girl, Lancome,
etc.) to ask about lists of GF products in spite of this. These letters were
sent over a month and a half ago, and I have heard nothing. I know some
companies really don't care (especially about E-mail letters), but to
completely ignore potential customers is not good business. I now buy Ecco
Bella lipstick at Whole Foods. The only product on their ingredients list
(Get this! On each tube of lipstick comes a list of ingredients!) that was
iffy in my mind was "vitamin E", and this was what prompted my question to the
list. But today I talked to the president of Ecco Bella (also E.B.
Botanicals) and she told me that their vitamin E is not made from any
gluten-containing ingredient. And they are soft and very pretty-colored
lipsticks, as well.
In addition to all this information, I also learned from asking this question
that vitamin E can be in a soybean base or various other bases, as well. So
if a company says they didn't use wheat germ oil, we can believe them because
there are numerous other options.
Thanks for the answers and the time you all spent writing me!
