Subject: New version of K1000 announced
ANNOUNCEMENT
L&H Kurzweil 1000 Version 5.0 from L&H Kurzweil Educational Systems.
This new release of the award-winning L&H Kurzweil 1000 reading software
provides enhanced levels of OCR (optical character recognition) --
including
the
unique ability to accurately read tables -- plus, this new version
includes
the
award winning L&H? RealSpeak, the clearest, most human sounding speech
available. Shipments of L&H Kurzweil 1000 will begin on Wednesday, March
22,
2000.
Here is what you can expect from L&H Kurzweil 1000 Version 5.0:
- L&H RealSpeak, the new speech engine developed by Lernout & Hauspie
(L&H),
is
now included with L&H Kurzweil 1000 Version 5.0. While other speech
engines
are
based on sounds of vowels and consonants and the connecting sounds between
them, L&H RealSpeak is based on actual human voice speech segments.
Syllables,
words, and common phrases are recorded, stored, and used by L&H RealSpeak
to
convert any text into speech.
- L&H Kurzweil 1000 Version 5.0 includes the latest releases of two OCR
engines.
The new release of the RTK (Recognition Tool Kit) engine from ExperVision
provides a significant improvement in recognition accuracy, while
maintaining
its impressive speed. The FineEngine release includes five additions to
the
already impressive list of languages recognized. They are Dutch-Belgian,
Norwegian-Bokmal, Norwegian-Nynorsk, Portuguese-Brazilian, and Swahili.
The
new
L&H Kurzweil 1000 Version 5.0 now recognizes close to 60 languages.
- International Text-to-Speech (TTS) is now included for 8 languages: US
and
UK
English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Dutch, and Russian.
- Table Recognition is now possible in L&H Kurzweil 1000. When table
identification is enabled in the reading settings dialog, tables will be
automatically identified and spoken. When reading continuously, the L&H
Kurzweil
1000 will announce the start and end of a table, and will preface the
contents
of each table cell by its row and column headers. You can move from cell
to
cell
in a table, and determine where you are in the table by requesting the
cell's
headers. You can continuously read tables row by row, or column by column.
- Automatic Place Holding is improved when closing a .kes file. As you
close t
he file, L&H Kurzweil 1000 places a bookmark at the beginning of the
sentence
you were reading. The next time you open up this file, the program
automatically resumes reading at that sentence.
- Reverse Braille Translation lets you open a braille file (file extension
.brl,.brf, or .bfm) in L&H Kurzweil 1000. When doing so, L&H Kurzweil
1000
automatically performs a reverse braille translation so that the contents
of
the
file can be read.
- Corrections Files that are useful in one type of document can be useless
in
another. For example, if you scan some documents in English and others in
Spanish, you need to create and use two different lists of corrections --
one
for the English and one for the Spanish. Or you may need a separate
corrections
list for the problems that inevitably creep in when a reverse braille
translation is performed. L&H Kurzweil 1000 now allows you to create and
select
multiple Corrections Files for occasions such as these.
- Reading Duration lets you specify how long L&H Kurzweil 1000 will read
aloud.
This is particularly useful for people who wish to use a tape recorder to
capture spoken text.
- File dialogs now support eight different sort orders for file names, as
well
as standard short cuts for cutting, pasting, and deleting files. You can
now
select and open multiple files through the file open dialog. You can also
examine and modify file properties.
- File Navigation has been changed to more closely follow standards. You
can
select the contents of an entire document with Control plus A, get to the
beginning of a document with Control plus Home, and the end with Control
plus
End. Control plus Backspace will delete the previous word, Control plus
Delete
will delete the next word.
- The L&H Kurzweil 1000 Demo CD now runs for a full 30-days from the time
you
install it on your computer. The free demo can be requested via the L&H
Kurzweil web site at

or
