aloha, y'all!
just a quick last-minute reminder that VICUG NYC's February 2000 Meeting
will be held TODAY, FEBRUARY EIGHTH, in the Auditorium of Selis Manor at 6pm.
The February Eighth meeting will be divided into (at least) four parts.
First, Audrey Schading will be speaking about Audio Book Plus, a directory
of Accessible book sources, including unique sources of accessible
materials, which she is preparing to sell for a small fee
Second, Steve Landau, will briefly address the membership regarding a new
project that he is working on. You may remember Steve's excellent
presentation about the Talking Tactile Tablet -- a device for running
interactive multi-media computer applications on a tactile pad -- he is
developing from VICUG NYC's June 1999 meeting. Recently, Steve secured
funding to develop a new version of the device and an application for
mathematical education, so Steve is coming to today's meeting in order to
tell us about it, and to invite VICUG NYC members to participate in the
evaluation process.
Third, Gregory J. Rosmaita will speak briefly about the implications of the
World Wide Web Consortium's Authoring Tool Accessibility Guidelines
reaching "Recommendation Status". Which, in plain English, means how these
guidelines will impact your interaction with the web -- in particular, by
creating more accessible web sites AND by making it possible for all of us
to create web pages. If there is time, Gregory (don't you love it when i
refer to myself in the third person?) will also briefly address recent
developments with the User Agent Accessibility Guidelines, the aim of which
is to provide equal access to web-based content for ALL users. These
guidelines, in conjunction with the Web Content Guidelines, issued last
year by the W3C to provide web page authors/designers with a set of
checkpoints and techniques that they can use to ensure that the pages they
create are accessible, will affect everything we do on the Web, from
reading newspapers to shopping for CDs, which is a convoluted way of saying
that i'm not usually as boring as i sound! And, if i keep on topic, i also
hope to deliver a brief update on the Congressional Sub-Committee hearings
on the application of the ADA to private web sites, which are to be held on
February Ninth.
Finally, our beloved and esteemed president, Jay Leventhal will lead an
open discussion (isn't that an oxymoron?) on the future of VICUG NYC. What
sort of topics would you like to hear us address? What sort of special
interest groups are you interested in? Come to Selis Manor on Tuesday,
February Eighth and let us know!
Any remaining time at the February Eighth meeting will be devoted to an
"Open Floor", where you are welcome to ask -- and, answer -- any questions
about computers.
Membership dues for Y2K will be collected by VICUG NYC's Treasurer, Vita
Zavoli, at the February Eighth meeting. Dues are a mere twelve dollars, and
endow you with the right to hold office and the right to vote. If you plan
on paying in cash, please bring exact change! Thanks to all who paid at the
December and January meetings.
