The vOICe integrated e-mail feature is now available
in The vOICe Learning Edition's latest version, 1.28,
running on Windows 95, 98 and NT. It is assumed that
you already use a powerful screen reader such as Jaws
for Windows or Window-Eyes.
You simply point your PC camera to anything of interest
while hearing the corresponding image sounds, and press
Control M to enter the e-mail dialog and enter an e-mail
address, for instance of a friend. After that, an e-mail
message with an image and sound attachment is automatically
constructed and sent to the recipient that you specified.
So you can easily send a snapshot of your camera view to
someone else.
More information about The vOICe mail feature can be read
on the new web page
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Peter_Meijer/voicemail.htm
Apart from sending camera images and sounds, you can also
apply the new mail extension in math education and distance
learning. For instance, you can first create a sound graph
of a mathematical function through the scientific graphing
dialog by pressing F8, and then send the resulting plot to
a teacher or a fellow student through the mail dialog by
pressing Control M and entering the e-mail address of the
recipient. The recipient will then receive an e-mail with
two binary attachments, vOICe.bmp and vOICe.wav, possibly
renamed to 1_vOICe.bmp and 1_vOICe.wav, respectively. The
first attachment is an image file in BMP format showing the
graph, while the second attachment is the corresponding sound
file in WAV format. If the recipient runs The vOICe Learning
Edition, he or she can not only listen to the sound file but
also load the BMP image file to hear its sonification and
apply zoom, move around in the plot using the arrow keys,
and so on, to better hear out any graphical details.
Other recent extensions include support for reading and
writing JPEG image files and MP3 audio encoding through
optional add-ons. The vOICe Learning Edition software can
be downloaded for evaluation from the web page
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Peter_Meijer/winvoice.htm
The software is fully functional, does not expire and is
currently available for free - for non-commercial use.
