Celebrate ADA: Our Stamp! Bobby On A Roll.

The United States Postal Service is currently issuing a series of stamps
entitled "Celebrate the Century", commemorating important events of
recent decades. They have already "done" the 1950s, '60s,and '70s. They
are currently accepting votes on nominated events of the 1980s. In May,
1999, the Postal Service will ask all citizens to go to their website at
www.usps.com and vote on several proposed subjects for stamps in that
series commemorating key events of the 1990s. They will not accept
write-in votes, but only votes on the five or six nominated events.

For many of us, the obvious number one event of the 1990s was the passage
of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. With the ADA under attack
in the courts, it would be a very good thing to have a stamp promoting
public awareness of the Act as a valuable part of the American way of
life. There is a consumer advisory committee that makes the decision on
what goes on the ballot for each decade. They are still accepting
nominations for the 1990's. The more public interest (letters) they get
for a particular nomination, the better chance it has of getting on the
ballot.

So - if we want to have the passage of the ADA considered as a memorable
event of the 1990's we have to write letters to this committee asking for
this. Remember to mention the Turn of the Century program and the
nominations for
the 1990's. Send your letters to:

    The Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee
    United States Postal Service
    475 L'enfant Plaza SW
    Room 4474E
    Washington, D.C. 20260-2437

and tell them that we want to see an ADA stamp issued in the year 2000,
the Tenth Anniversary Year of the ADA, as a part of their Celebrate the
Century series.

Please spread this letter writing request to other mailing lists and
disability groups. We need to act quickly. They will be making
nominations soon.
